"The future in your hands," Funcom promised gamers in the early days of the new decade. As the MMORPGRPG genre slowly took shape and grew in popularity, game studios were still babes in the woods, feeling out this brave and complex new world without a standard handbook to guide them to success. EverQuest spotlighted on large group substence and raids, Dark Age o.... Read More

We may be in the dog days of summer, but that doesn't mean that MMORPG factories close up shop. On the contrary, the team at Anarchy Online is faithfully hacking away at upcoming changes and additions to the game. Senior Designer Brad L. McAtee (no, he doesn't do virus checking) in recent times made the rounds to see what the team was working on, and report back .... Read More

Funcom's Age of Conan has adopted a free-to-play business model for its entrance into the Korean market, according to a report by MMORPG Culture. While this isn't exactly news (since basically every game in Korea is F2P), it was fascinating to note executive producer and game director Craig "Silirrion" Morrison's response. Morrison quickly douse.... Read More

I sit here, racking my brain, trying to think of the very first free-to-play game that I experienced. It's been quite a long time, at least seven years. As a quick history, I started in MMORPGRPGs in '99, by bringing home a box of Ultima Online for my wife to look at. She laughed at me at first.... Read More

After a long hard day of adventuring -- or bargaining -- gamers in Anarchy Online can settle in for a frosty adult beverage and look into some entertainment. While the full-size of today's One Shots image does have rather a lot more UI than we'd normally pass through, we couldn't resist taking a (duck-free) look into the game in honor of its recent 9th birthday! Today.... Read More

After cracking open the history textbooks on one of the most famous (and infamous) MMORPGs of the past decade and talking to two groups of crack veterans, it was finally time for the Game Archaeologist to strap on his lightwhip, kick over the nearest Astromech droid, and dive headfirst into Star Wars Galaxies.

Although I've been interested in Star .... Read More

Quick -- make a wish, Anarchy Online, and blow out those birthday candles so we can have some of that early-2000s cake! Might be a little old-fashioned with sharp polygons, but ample citizens are still lining up for a slice of its moist gameplay.

Tortured metaphor aside, a MMORPG once renowned for the worst commence of all time is now a year shy of its deca.... Read More

Anarchy Online : Funcom's Morrison talks story in MMORPGs

Funcom game director Craig "Silirrion" Morrison has delivered an epic-length post over on his personal blog examining the different aspects of story in MMORPGRPGs. Given the fact that BioWare has in recent times raised a few eyebrows with their story, story, and more story mantra (not to point out some old-fashioned genre heckling), it seems only natural that indus.... Tis the season for getting cool things -- and for making new friends. The idea is pretty simple: for every one of the Funcom accounts you link up with, yo.... Read More

Anarchy Online : Free to play an option for Age of Conan

It would appear that for Funcom, going the way of free-to-play with Age of Conan isn't entirely off the table. At least so says Erling Ellingson in a recent conversation with IncGamers. There's certainly a precedent with Anarchy Online having gone that route long ago and its director -- at that time -- was also Craig Morrison. So actually, all bets are off on this one.
